Mike Pieciak Seeks Reelection as Vermont State Treasurer

Currently in his second term, Pieciak has consistently garnered over 60 percent of the votes in previous elections.

With a focus on key issues affecting Vermont residents, State Treasurer Mike Pieciak is looking to secure another term in office. His reelection campaign emphasizes the need for new housing developments, enhanced retirement security, and improved access to affordable health care. Pieciak has observed a significant rise in affordability concerns among citizens, noting that many individuals feel increasingly unable to afford life in Vermont.

Currently in his second term, Pieciak, a Democrat, has consistently garnered over 60 percent of the votes in previous elections. As of the latest updates, no other candidates have declared their intention to run against him. The treasurer is committed to running an active campaign to inform voters about his initiatives and accomplishments.

A native of Brattleboro, Pieciak's prior experience includes serving as the commissioner of the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation under both Democratic Governor Peter Shumlin and Republican Governor Phil Scott. In this role, he was instrumental in recovering millions for taxpayers and unearthing fraudulent economic development schemes linked to the federal EB-5 investor program.

His capabilities were further demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he played a pivotal role in guiding Vermont's response, focusing on data analysis and becoming a familiar figure at statewide press conferences.

Pieciak's office has championed initiatives investing in affordable housing and providing retirement savings options for small businesses and nonprofits. A notable program he oversees is the 10 Percent in Vermont initiative, which has successfully allocated around $125 million to develop approximately 1,700 housing units statewide, catering to various needs including affordable and senior housing. He expressed a deep commitment to continue working on these housing issues, with expectations of legislative approval for an additional $30 million funding for the initiative.

The Vermont Saves program has also been launched, allowing small employers and nonprofits to set up retirement plans for their staff. To date, 6,200 Vermonters have enrolled, a significant percentage of whom are younger than 40. He aims to expand participation to 20,000 individuals across the state.

Another key initiative aims to eliminate up to $100 million in medical debt for residents, while a cooperative pharmacy discount program with neighboring states is being established. Additionally, a new project, First Steps Forward, is being developed to support new mothers and infants living in poverty in the Northeast Kingdom, providing mental health support and financial assistance.

Pieciak's responsibilities extend beyond high-profile programs to managing pension and investment systems for approximately 60,000 teachers, state workers, and municipal employees. He emphasizes the importance of strong pensions, especially since they have displayed improved financial stability over the past four years.

In his role, he also ensures that state financial obligations are met efficiently. He engages with the legislative process to provide insights on budget matters and actively works to recover unclaimed property for residents, making personal efforts when possible.

Vermont will hold a primary on August 11, followed by a general election scheduled for November 3.
