Firefighters Pay Tribute to Former Brattleboro Assistant Chief

Murray, who held various roles including assistant fire chief, state trooper, and public servant, passed away at home on June 1, 2026, at the age of 81.

Route 9 in Spofford, N.H. saw a funeral procession for Robert W. “Bob” Murray, a notable figure in Brattleboro’s history. Murray, who held various roles including assistant fire chief, state trooper, and public servant, passed away at home on June 1, 2026, at the age of 81. He was surrounded by family and friends during his final moments following a prolonged illness.

Murray was originally from Columbus, Ohio, born on October 31, 1944, to parents William and Marjorie Murray. He and his family later moved to Swanzey, N.H., where he completed his education at Keene High School, graduating in 1962.

His journey into public service began early in life, leading him to obtain an associate degree in Fire Science from the Community College of Vermont and training at the Vermont Police Academy. His service with the Vermont State Police lasted from 1967 to 1973.

In the late 1960s, he cultivated his enthusiasm for firefighting by joining the Wilmington Volunteer Fire Department, where he was active until the early 1970s. In 1974, he became part of the Brattleboro Fire Department, where he worked diligently until his retirement as assistant chief in 1995. He held several firefighting certifications and was also a certified Emergency Medical Technician.

The Wilmington Fire Department commemorated Murray's contributions by naming him an Honorary Firefighter several years prior. A special plate recognizing this was displayed on his vehicle. The department also reflected on a sign that hung in their office, attributing its origin to Murray and his late wife, Diane, which emphasized the warmth of the fire service community.

After retiring from firefighting, Murray and Diane relocated to New Mexico, where he served as a probation officer for four years. They eventually returned to Brattleboro, and he continued to serve the community through the Brattleboro Department of Public Works until retiring after 19 years.

Murray believed in lifelong education and achieved a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Personnel Management from Norwich University while maintaining full-time employment.

In his personal life, he was involved in various activities beyond his professional commitments. Murray was a long-standing member of the American Society of Dowsers and had interests in Reiki, writing, crafting walking sticks and jewelry, and cherishing time spent with loved ones.

Murray married Diane Marie Duhaime on August 17, 1973, at the Congregational Church in Wilmington. She passed away on May 3, 2011.

The graveside service for Murray was set for June 5 at Mountain View Cemetery in Swanzey. Those wishing to honor his memory could contribute to Shriners Children's Hospital New England in Springfield, Mass., or support the Wilmington Fire Department.

His enduring impact on various communities as a trooper, firefighter, probation officer, and municipal worker is remembered fondly by friends and colleagues, who describe him as a committed public servant and family man devoted to aiding others.
